Spring, summer, fall and winter are called ____(seasons)______.
Do you suppose they are mentioned in the bible? You bet. Genesis 8:22 says; “As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.”
Are there seasons in our individual lives? Yes, of course.
From when you are born until you start school, all your school years, young adulthood, marriage and child rearing, older age, and retirement until your death.
There are seasons in the church also. Which season have we just finished?
Yes, Christmas.
Just prior to Christmas we celebrated ___(Advent)___.
Advent means? Coming or arrival.
So we anticipated the arrival of the Baby Jesus. He and our celebration of Christmas arrived and we celebrate that until tonight.
Any idea what we celebrate tonight? Yes, The feast of Epiphany.
For the next nine Sundays we will be in the season of Epiphany. It is sometimes called “common time” and during this season we remember Jesus’ life from his birth, to his trip to Jerusalem, his baptism by John in the Jordan, his temptation by Satan, the calling of his disciples and to the miracle at the wedding feast.
On Wednesday, March 9th we will celebrate another special day in the church. Any idea what that will be? Yes, Ash Wednesday.
And what church season does that start? Yes, Lent.
Is Lent a happy, yellow kind of season, or a somber, brownish kind of season?
More brownish as we look at our lives and how we are living them and compare them with the life of Jesus.
At the close of Lent there is a special Friday we celebrate, and that is?
Good Friday or as some people call it Black Friday.
What happened on that day? Yes, Jesus was crucified.
Two days later on Sunday we celebrate what? Yes, Easter!!!
And what does Easter mean to us as Christians?
Why should we care about the seasons in the Church year? Or do we care?
Did Jesus celebrate the feasts and special days of the Jewish faith?
Luke 2:21 – Jesus was only eight days old and already in church. I believe this would have taken place in the local synagogue, and would not have been a long trip. By the way, how many families were required to establish a synagogue?
Yes, ten.
Luke 2:22 – purification of the mother, for 40 days Mary had been considered ‘unclean’ and now her time was served, so to speak.
Luke 2:41 – Every year and according to the custom tells us what about how Joseph and Mary observed the Jewish tradition, feasts and laws?
